New York: PepsiCo Inc named Europe chief Zain Abdullah president, taking over for John Compton, who is leaving the post after six months to become chief executive officer of Pilot Flying J Oil Corp
Enderson Guimaraes, now president of PepsiCo’s global nutrition group, will take Abdullah’s former position, the Purchase, New York-based company said yesterday in a statement. The changes were effective immediately.
Chief Executive Officer Indra Nooyi has been boosting marketing spending and started a global advertising campaign for the flagship Pepsi-Cola brand to regain market share from Coca- Cola Co. Abdullah helped double sales in PepsiCo’s European unit to about $14 billion in his time as its CEO and now will oversee the global beverages, snacks and nutrition groups along with operations, marketing and strategy, PepsiCo said.
Abdullah “is well-regarded in the organization and among investors” and is the most likely successor to Nooyi in the medium term, Ali Dibadj, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. in New York, said in an e-mail. Dibadj rates PepsiCo “outperform,” the #####alent of a buy.
Guimaraes came to Pepsi last year from Electrolux AB, where he headed the company’s European appliance business. He will be based in Geneva, while Abdullah will work from Purchase.
Compton, who started with PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay unit and was named president in March, is taking over the closely held chain of Pilot Flying J truck stops, based in his home state of Tennessee.
His departure is “certainly a surprise” because he was supposed to be an integral part of PepsiCo’s turnaround, Jack Russo, an analyst with Edward Jones & Co. in St. Louis, said yesterday in a telephone interview. PepsiCo has a “deep bench” of talent, he added. Russo rates the shares buy.
PepsiCo fell 0.4 per cent to $71.58 on Tuesday in New York. The shares had gained 7.9 per cent this year.
